Family Picnic in the Park Retains Its “Two-Star Event on the Path to Zero Waste” Status

Last Friday, 12 June 2026, Krško City Park once again came alive with a wonderful atmosphere of togetherness, creativity and fun. Visitors of all ages enjoyed a varied programme at the Family Picnic in the Park, organised by CPT Krško, JSKD Krško, Valvasor Library Krško, Krško City Museum, and numerous local associations and organisations.

Ribič Pepe was undoubtedly the highlight for the youngest visitors, filling the park with children’s laughter and positive energy. The programme also featured performances by the Krško Majorettes and Krško Music School, as well as an acoustic concert by Sara Praznik and Peter Jeretina. The evening concluded with Blišč tujega življenja, a theatre performance by Teater Rajhenburški.



Visitors could take part in a wide range of creative workshops and activities, including climbing, jewellery-making, crocheting, woodworking and various interactive activities. Other highlights included Znameniti Posavci, a visit to the Hočevar Mausoleum, an exhibition of artwork by primary school pupils, and plenty of fun moments captured in the photo booth.

The “Bring & Take” swap corner also attracted plenty of interest, giving visitors the opportunity to exchange books and toys and, in doing so, encourage the reuse of pre-loved items. Local vendors provided a tempting selection of sweet and savoury treats, along with refreshing drinks.

Family Picnic Once Again Follows Zero-Waste Principles

This year’s Family Picnic in the Park once again followed zero-waste principles, with a strong focus on reducing the amount of waste generated at the event. As organisers, we aimed to keep waste to an absolute minimum while ensuring careful waste separation to facilitate reuse, recycling and the continued circulation of materials.

Throughout the event, visitors were encouraged to dispose of waste responsibly and separate it correctly at designated recycling stations. A Green Team was also present at the venue to advise visitors and help them sort their waste correctly.

The programme featured numerous activities promoting a more sustainable way of life. A particular highlight this year was the “Bring & Take” swap corner, where visitors could exchange board games, books and toys, extending the useful life of items that might otherwise have been discarded. Reusable deposit cups, reduced use of single-use packaging and creative workshops promoting the reuse of materials also helped minimise the amount of waste generated.

Visitors were encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles, cups or mugs, while drinking water was also available from a public water fountain at the venue.

A representative of Ekologi brez meja (Ecologists Without Borders) monitored the event, assessing the implementation of waste prevention and reduction measures and verifying whether the criteria for the “Event on the Path to Zero Waste” certification had been met.


 

This Year’s Family Picnic – The Results

• Total waste generated: 3.07 kg
• Waste generated per visitor: 5.1 g

The waste collected consisted of:

• Organic waste: 0.95 kg
• Packaging waste: 1.43 kg
• Paper: 0.18 kg
• Mixed waste: 0.51 kg
• Glass: 0 kg

In total, the entire event generated just 3.07 kg of waste, equivalent to only 5.1 g per visitor. This is an even better result than the previous year, when 3.6 kg of waste was generated, or 6 g per visitor. The figures demonstrate that, through responsible practices by organisers, vendors and visitors alike, even larger events can be organised with a minimal environmental impact.

Based on this year’s results, the event has retained its status as a “Two-Star Event on the Path to Zero Waste”.
These results show that together, we have once again taken another step in the right direction. A heartfelt thank you to all our visitors, vendors, participating associations and volunteers whose responsible actions helped us create an enjoyable event while keeping waste to a minimum.

Because we want to organise events that are enjoyable for visitors while also being kind to the environment. Every piece of waste we prevent or correctly separate represents an important step towards using resources more efficiently and reducing our environmental impact.
