Krško City Museum
The City Museum of Krško operates as a branch of the Krško Cultural Centre and has been housed in the renovated Valvasor Complex since 30 March 2010.
The City Museum of Krško (Mestni muzej Krško in Slovene) operates as a branch of the Krško Cultural Centre and has been housed in the renovated Valvasor Complex since 30 March 2010. In 1993, it was declared a cultural and historical monument. The statue of the polymath Valvasor, made by sculptor and medallist Vladimir Štoviček, BFA has adorned its front since 1966. The complex consists of three houses: the first from the late Renaissance period, dubbed the Valvasor House, and the adjacent Jarnovič and Kaplan Houses, Krško’s oldest preserved buildings, which were first erected in the late 15th century and represent the finest part of the Old Town in terms of architecture.
The museum features permanent collections presenting Krško’s most illustrious residents. These include the polymath Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641 – 1693), the patron of the arts and industrialist Jospina Hočevar (1824 – 1911) and the sculptor and medallist Vladimir Štoviček, BFA in sculpture (1896 – 1889). The current display is part of an extensive body of work that the artist donated to the Municipality of Krško to mark his 80th birthday.
Museum also displays the collection of Valvasor’s prints, the so-called Iconotheca Valvasoriana, the full translation of his book The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, and older facsimiles dating back to 1877. Since 2015, an exhibition presents the tragic fate of a group of youth who began forming plans to resist the occupying German forces as early as 1941. They are also dubbed ‘the first resistance fighters’ or ‘the casualties of Krško’, and the main and longest street in the town is named after them (Cesta krških žrtev). In addition to Krško’s famous residents, the permanent collection also showcases the town in various periods of its history, the most representative exhibition being entitled ‘The long enlightened 18th century’ and recounting the way of life during this time and the link between townsfolk and the River Sava.
The Museum also allows a good insight into the heritage of the town’s broader surroundings, depicted by the ‘The mead-producing and gingerbread-making route between Krško and Zagreb’ exhibit. The City Museum of Krško is a very active institution, regularly hosting specialised lectures, fostering education with creative workshops intended for schoolchildren and adults alike, as well as other events. With is permanent collections, temporary exhibitions and broader programme, it forges and presents the cultural identity of the town and Municipality of Krško.
