Report on Sustainability Indicators of the Krško Tourist Destiantion for year 2023

In 2022, Urban Municipality of Krško received GOLD key in Slovenia Green Destination scheme which ranks second in the Slovenian Tourist Board's keys. Slovenia Green Destination key confirms that our destination is recognized for its sustainability and will continue to develop this kind of tourist offers in the future.


Krško Urban Municipality had a population of 25 982 in 2022. It spreads on 286.5 square kilometres in the Southeastern part of Slovenia, where Sava River valley spills out onto the fields of Krško polje marked off by Krka River to the South. With its 158 settlements and 14 local communities and two town quarters, it lies in Krško valley next to Krško polje and is intersected by Sava and Krka rivers and surrounded by Bohor and Gorjanci hills.

Krško is easily accessible. Tourists mostly visit by car. The fastest way from Western Slovenia is using the Ljubljana­–Zagreb highway. From Maribor, the road takes us along Sava River, and from Zagreb we can take the highway and take the Drnovo exit. The three train stations in Krško (Brestanica, Krško and Libna) connect railroad traffic from Ljubljana, Maribor and Zagreb. The nearest airports are Zagreb (distance of approximately 50 km) and Ljubljana (distance of approximately 100 km).

Protected areas in this destination cover a total of 9.6 % of the destination area, Natura 2000 area covers 21.2 % of the area, ecologically important areas cover 44.8 %, and valuable natural features cover 11.3 % of the area.



In 2023, 73.4 % of all collected waste in the destination was separated and 61.3 % of all waste waters were purified in proportion to water sold in the destination.

Destination offers numerous attractive walking and cycling routes. Diverse selection of walking paths allows everything from short walks and excursions to more challenging routes. Most guest visit between March and November (Trekking festival in spring and autumn, numerous events in summer and autumn).


Destination is easily accessible and safe. It encourages environmentally friendly and carbon-free travels within the destination. The destination offers bicycle-sharing free-of-charge (»Krčan«) at 11 bicycle-sharing stations covering 88 bicycles. The tourist providers also offer eco-bikes and charging stations for electric vehicles. Bicycle path between Krško and Kostanjevica na Krki was completed in 2023, covering a total length of 19.5 km.

 

We are aware of the green assets of the destination and wish to preserve its valuable heritage for future generations through sustainable development in all areas, including tourism, and by taking into account the guidelines from the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism.

There are 371 cultural heritage units registered in the destination, 56 of which have the status of cultural monument (5 units are monuments of national cultural importance, 51 units are sites of local cultural importance).



Destination can also boast with two tourist companies receiving internationally acclaimed Green Key as sustainability key (Kunst Inn and Hotel, Tri lučke Restaurant and Hotel) and also received the secondary Destination Green Cuisine and Destination Green Accommodation keys.

Destination is being promoted as active, green and environmentally friendly destination with focus on tradition, culture and gastronomy, as well as commitment to sustainable tourism.
