Sustainability of the Krško Destination: Achievements and Indicators

In March 2025, the Krško destination received the Slovenia Green Destination Silver label, based on numerous sustainability efforts and activities, confirming that the destination is recognised for its sustainable performance.


  

Since obtaining the label, the Municipality of Krško has been actively pursuing sustainable tourism development. In 2025, activities were carried out in the following areas:

Education and Training

Education and training programmes for tourism stakeholders in the destination encourage the transition to a green economy and sustainable resource management. Tourism businesses were regularly informed and encouraged to participate in training in the field of sustainable tourism.
  • Presentation of Calls to Join the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism 2025
  • Sustainable Business Practices
  • Plastic-free events (no single-use plastics)
  

Good Travel Seal Sustainability Label for Gostilna and Hotel Kunst

The tourism provider Gostilna and Hotel Kunst obtained the environmental/sustainability label GOOD TRAVEL SEAL, thereby contributing to the green and sustainable tourism story of the Krško destination.

  

Tourism Events and Festivals
Tourism events and festivals are a very important factor for the destination, as they serve as a key platform for presentation and promotion. Special emphasis is placed on local and seasonal offerings, without the use of single-use plastics and with reusable packaging.
In 2025, the following events were held:
  • Beer & BBQ Festival Krško
  • Family Picnic in the Park – an event on the path to zero waste (2*)
  • Month of Flavours of Posavje
  • Street Food Festival Flavours of Posavje
  • St. Martin’s Weekend in Posavje
  • Festive Lights Switch-On
  • Events at Videm Market and promotion of rural economies
  • (Carnival Fair, Easter Fair, Beekeeping Mosaic, St. Martin’s Fair, St. Nicholas Fair)

Development Projects

The local community, public institutions, companies and associations of the Krško destination actively participate at the local and regional levels in various projects that are part of the destination’s tourism development. In 2025, projects co-financed by EU funds and contributing to tourism development included:
  • Posavje in the Palm of Your Hand, on the Plate and in the Glass
  • Green Habits for Green Tourism (Go green, go clean)
  • Solidarytown
  • Hospitality
Care for Cultural Heritage

The Municipality of Krško joined the Association of Historic Towns of Slovenia, which now includes 24 member towns. The association connects Slovenian historic towns declared as cultural monuments and actively strives to preserve and revitalise historic town centres and rich cultural heritage.
A formal requirement for membership was fulfilled by the adoption of a decree declaring the old town centre of Krško a cultural monument of local importance. With this important step, Krško clearly expressed its commitment to preserving the cultural identity and heritage of the town. In addition, the Local Cultural Programme of the Municipality of Krško 2026–2033 was adopted.

  

Development of Tourism Infrastructure

In 2025, public investments in facilities and equipment to support tourism infrastructure development began, including:
  • Urban Sports Park – connecting urban and natural areas
  • Start of construction of the Krško Swimming Pool
  • Castle Dreams – sustainable revitalisation of Rajhenburg Castle
  • Adoption of the Rules on Co-financing Renovations in Historic Town and Market Centres and Private Tourist Accommodations
  • Renovation of the mountain hut on Bohor
  • Investments in the Matija Gubec Stadium area 
 

Sustainable Mobility

The Municipality of Krško adopted the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for the period 2025–2032, which has now entered the implementation phase. The main measures focus on walking, cycling, public transport and motorised traffic:
  • Construction of cycling paths and expansion of the free bicycle-sharing system Krčan, improving cycling safety and accessibility to key locations in the town. A total of 62 bicycles are available at 13 stations.
  • Introduction of an electric bus, improving conditions for sustainable mobility and environmentally friendly public transport.
  • Updated city bus timetable.
  • Two additional bus routes to Sremič and Trška Gora.
  • Construction of a cycling connection between Krško and Stari Grad.
  • Improvement of sidewalks, roads, parking areas and multi-purpose paths.

Sustainability Indicators

Protected natural areas cover 23.74% of the destination’s total area. Of this, Natura 2000 sites account for 21.2%, natural values 8.11%, and protected areas 2.06% of the destination.
In 2025, 75,8% of waste generated in the destination was collected separately, and 60% of wastewater was treated relative to the volume of water sold in the destination.
The destination has 371 registered units of cultural heritage, of which 56 units have the status of cultural monuments (5 of national importance and 51 of local importance). Visits to cultural heritage sites are guided and supervised.
The destination offers numerous hiking and cycling trails that attract visitors, ranging from short walks and easy excursions to more demanding routes. The majority of visitors arrive between March and November.
