Activities carried out in the field of sustainable development of destination Krško 2022-2024
In 2022, the destination Krško received the Slovenia Green Destination GOLD label, which is the second highest on the Slovenian Tourist Board's scale. The Slovenia Green Destination label was obtained on the basis of numerous sustainable efforts and activities that confirm that the destination is recognized for its sustainable operations.
The destination Krško is
accessible by public transport. Tourists can travel to the destination by public transport (
bus or
train) from Ljubljana, Maribor and Zagreb. We have prepared
green habits and
green tips for visitors to the destination. For independent exploration of the destination, a system of marking hiking trails with directional signs on the ground and digitally with GPX tracks has been established.
Protected nature reserves of the destination
cover a total of 23.74% of the destination's area, of which Natura 2000 covers 21.2% of the destination, natural values 8.11% of the area and protected areas 2.06% of the entire destination.
In 2024, as much as
72.5% of the total amount of waste in the destination was collected separately and
60% of wastewater was treated in relation to the water sold in the destination.
The destination offers numerous
hiking and cycling routes that attract visitors. There is a diverse choice of trails available, from shorter walks and easier excursions to more demanding trails. Most visitors visit us in the period from March to November (hiking festival in the spring and autumn months, numerous events in the summer and autumn months). In 2024, the
Krško destination received the hiking destination certificate, namely for the category of easy family hiking and for the mid-mountain range.
Boutique green experiences represent countermeasure for mass tourism. In 2022, the title of boutique experience was awarded to the tourist product
The Royal seven - Inspiring Stories of the Castles of Posavje, of which Rajhenburg Castle is also a part. In 2023, Krško destination and its tourist offer were included in
Slovenia Green Gourmet Route connecting the best Slovenian gastronomical destinations. Green experiences are offered by individual accommodation providers (Kunst, Tri lučke).
Destination is
easily accessible and safe. It encourages environmentally friendly and carbon-free travels within the destination. In accordance with the Integrated Transport Strategy, the goal of the Krško destination is to continue with sustainable transport planning - as many infrastructure options as possible for cycling, walking and the use of public transport. Thus, through the construction of bicycle paths and the expansion of the free bicycle rental network in Krčan, cycling safety and accessibility to all important points in the city are being improved. The destination offers
bicycle-sharing free-of-charge (»Krčan«) at 11 bicycle-sharing stations covering 55 bicycles. The tourist providers also offer
e-bikes and charging stations for electric vehicles. In 2023, the construction of the Krško - Kostanjevica na Krki
bicycle path with a total length of 19.5 km was completed.
The destination is aware of green capital and wants to preserve its valuable heritage for future generations through sustainable development in all areas, including tourism, and by following
green tips and green habits of destination.
There are
371 cultural heritage units registered in the destination, 56 of which have the status of cultural monument (5 units are monuments of national cultural importance, 51 units are sites of local cultural importance).
Between 2022 and 2024, numerous educations on the topic of sustainability were carried out for local providers and stakeholders of the destination, meetings were held, and individual visits were also carried out. Educations on the topic of events without single-use plastic and the implementation of zero waste events were carried out for event organizers. In 2024, we received the title of
zero waste event on the path with 2* use for the event Family Picnic in the Park. The Beer Festival and the Street Festival Tastes of Posavje are events that have
not used single-use plastic from the very beginning. Education was carried out for tourist guides in the field of sustainability and the preservation of nature and cultural heritage for our descendants, but we must also encourage visitors to preserve it in the right way. A code of ethics for tourist guides was also prepared and signed.
Destination is being promoted as
active, green and environmentally friendly destination with focus on
culture and gastronomy, as well as commitment to sustainable tourism.
